Department of Mathematics, Federico Santa María Technical University
The purpose of this page is to promote 3 permanent positions in the Department of Mathematics at the Federico Santa María Technical University (UTFSM), focusing on those researching in Algebraic Geometry and Complex Geometry (in a broad sense). Please feel free to share this information with individuals in related fields who may be interested.
Important: All information presented below is primarily based on my personal experience and does not necessarily represent the views of UTFSM or the Department of Mathematics. It should be considered indicative, as it may vary depending on the specific situation.
The expected start date for this position is March - July 2025, and the deadline for applications is November 24th, 2024.
Applicants should submit a CV, 2 letters of recommendation (please follow the instructions in the Google Form below), copies of academic degrees, copies of your publications (the "5 publications" indicated in the official announcement comes from the general template, please include all your publications), a motivation letter, and a summary of your research providing a brief account of past research and future perspectives (ideally mentioning possible collaborations at UTFSM and in Chile) and taking into account that other colleagues from the Math Department (not working in Algebraic Geometry) will read it.
Please submit the above documents in digital format through the following form:
IMPORTANT: See here for some points that should be explicitly stated in the CV.
The UTFSM is a renowned institution dedicated to Engineering and Exact Sciences. The main campus of UTFSM is located in Valparaíso, Chile, with two campuses in Santiago and one in Concepción. The current opening is for a full-time positions at the San Joaquín Campus (Santiago). The San Joaquín Campus is conveniently located in a university area, and many activities (such as weekly seminars in Algebraic Geometry) are conducted in collaboration with the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Chile, just one metro station away, as well as with the University of Chile and the University of Santiago de Chile.
Teaching is exclusive to students in Science and Engineering, especially for pre and postgraduate students in mathematics. Courses are taught in Spanish.
Typically, the academic workload is 3 courses per year for active researchers (which can eventually be accumulated in one semester). Typically, a course corresponds to 2.2 hours per week (1 hour and 10 minutes, two days a week), for 17 weeks. In other words, typically, a total of 112 annual teaching hours.
Important: Applicants who do not speak Spanish fluently should mention their willingness to acquire sufficient proficiency within a year to teach and interact effectively with students.
In Santiago and Valparaíso (1.5 hours away), there are several seminars on Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory. An (incomplete) list of some of the topics of interest to researchers in Algebraic Geometry and Complex Geometry in Chile includes: Fano varieties, Hodge theory, positivity in Algebraic Geometry, toric varieties, Brauer groups, abelian varieties, algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces, moduli spaces, stacks, surfaces of general type, algebraic combinatorics and discrete geometry, algebraic groups, geometry of hypersurfaces, singularity theory, K3 surfaces, Cox rings, and Mori Dream Spaces, among others. Every year, at least 3 national meetings are held, in addition to various international conferences.
Attention: The following amounts are indicative. The salary is attractive and competitive nationally, and depends on the academic evaluation of each applicant. The salary tax in Chile includes 7% for healthcare and 13% for retirement. UTFSM provides free lunch from Monday to Friday. Additionally, a total of 5 bonuses, each one-third of the monthly salary, are granted throughout the year (January, March, July, September, and December), meaning that 4/3 of the salary is received in those months. In addition to this, there is an annual performance bonus (granted at the end of October), awarded from the second year of the contract based on the performance of the previous year. After the two-year probationary period, the net salary increases. Moreover, there are 4 academic hierarchies (Instructor Professor, Adjunct Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor), and each step from one hierarchy to the next includes a salary increase.
In addition, professors joining UTFSM have an integration project of approximately 2,000,000 CLP to spend in a one-year period on research activities, such as research visits, conference participation, book purchases, students, etc. Additionally, each article published with UTFSM affiliation is rewarded (between 1,000,000 CLP and 2,000,000 CLP, depending on the WOS journal ranking) with an annual limit of 18,000,000 CLP.
Finally, it is expected that the candidate will apply for external projects such as "Fondecyt Iniciación" or "Fondecyt Regular." These projects, typically lasting between 3 and 4 years (respectively), include a salary bonus of 6,000,000 CLP and 4,500,000 CLP annually (respectively) for the responsible researcher. As a reference, to achieve a good CV evaluation in "Fondecyt Iniciación," it is recommended to have 2 accepted articles (not necessarily published) in "MB" journals in the official Fondecyt 2024 list (see also relevant pages of the PDF here). Professors at UTFSM who are awarded a Fondecyt project will also receive, in addition to project funding, about 600,000 CLP in Overhead to be used for research activities.
In case of any questions regarding UTFSM or the application, do not hesitate to contact me directly.
